Chase and Status - Time ft. Delilah

By Charlotte Lloyd

Lyrics

If you can find the time
To give your love to me
I will wait for you
If that's all you need
(Time, Time)
If you can find the time
(Time, Time)
If ever you're free
Just drop me a line
And tell me where you'll be
I'll be right here
If you can find the time
Just be sincere.
If you can find the time
I'll wait for you.
But if you can't find the time
(Time, Time, Time)
Then cut me loose.

'Cause I don't have the time
And I don't have the patience
What do you take me for
Why must I wait
'Cause while you decide
I'm fucking suffocating
'Cause if you can't find the time
My bleeding heart won't make it [x2]

If you can find the time
To give your love to me
Just drop me a line
And tell me where you'll be
I'll be right here
If you can find the time
Just be sincere

'Cause I don't have the time
And I don't have the patience
What do you take me for
Why must I wait
'Cause while you decide
I'm fucking suffocating
'Cause if you can't find the time,
My bleeding heart won't make it [x3]

I'll be right here
If you can find the time
Just be sincere
If you can find the time
I'll, I'll wait for you
But if you can't find the time
Then cut me loose.

'Cause I don't have the time
And I don't have the patience
What do you take me for
Why must I wait
'Cause while you decide
I'm fucking suffocating
'Cause if you can't find the time
My bleeding heart won't make it [x3]

'Cause I don't have the time [x6]
My bleeding heart won't make it

Storyline:

The story line stats at the start of the clip when they start showing shots of the family messing around in their living room. It looks happy and loving, however ou start to realise something is wrong when the oldest daughter has a suspious look of her face. The viewers question why she is not happy. This is then revealed as we start to see the father drinking a lot of achohol every night. This them becomes out of control when he starts to beatht he mother. Viewers can tell the daughter feels uncomtable and helpless as she tries to block out the screaming by putting her headphones in. She has a strong connection with her mother and the audience can tell that the mother has instructed the daughter to keep quiet. The viewers can see how uncomfortable the mother is becoming to feel as when the father starts to take her clothes off, she shivers connoting how scared she is when he simply touches her. She feels is constantly on edge around him. As the fathers drinking starts to become more and more excessive, the daughter is starting to feel her mothers pain. She is begining to break down and cry watching her mother covering up her bruises with make-up. It all becomes too much one night, when the father's anger streches out of control. He pushes his wife down the stairs, leaving her to cry, with a busted lip and multiple brusies at the bottom, lying helplessly. This becomes to much for daughter to watch and therefore she is only left to call the police. Once the father is arrested her and her mother go to visit him in prision, the father is pleased to see his wife however when the daughter catches his eye contact he simply stares her down making her feel uncomfotable and uneasy. She is so intimidated and threatened by her father that when her and her mother arrive home, the daughter takes it upon herself to leave. The last final scenes are the loving, warm goodbyes between her and her mother, before she is about to leave and start her own adventure.

Mise en Scene:

Throughout the clip the lighting is never constant and is always dependent and changing with what is happening in the scene or what tempo and speed the audio is. The light compliments both elements of the song.

The mise-en-scene for the lead singers solos is perfectly matched to connot her emotion of how she is feeling. The audience see her in a car, gazing out the window. It makes her seem alone and disconnected from the world. This empthaises how she is feeling and how upset

Sound:

There are no actual diegetic sounds in the video that orginally come fromt he narrative itself. All the audio in the video is simply the actual song. Most of this is non-diegetic sound as we do not see the artist throughout he narrative therefore the sound is coming from another source not shown on screen making it non-diegetic. However there is infact partly diegetic sounds, where we can see the female singer (deliah) sining the song from inside a car. Consequently where we can see her seeing, we can see the source of the sound makingit diegetic. There are no effects used to edit the audio, its simply the raw song. The audio itself does infact compliment the video. When dramtic images are shown in the visual the audio compliments with an increasing tempo or pitch, allowing the viewer to create the connection between the two. At 0:50 the tempo starts to increase. The video is representing when the father begins to beat the mother. The music creates a dramtic drop, just as the father slaps the mother. The connection between both video and audio allows the viewer to undstand the instesity of the footage. Similary at 2:25 the mother is pushed down the stairs. As the camera pans round to show the mother lying there helplessly, the audio compliements the visual by slowing the tempo down, to practically no beat. It implies tot he reader that everyone is on edge unaware of what is going to happen next. It causes a dramtic silence is the audience as it is unfamiliar to the viewers to hear such a slow beat therefore this illuminates that something is not right. The beat and tempo then begint o increase again back tofast paced as the police are called. This connotes the anger and frustration of the fathers temper.

Camera angle, postion and movement:

From the start and throughout the video, the camera follows all action. It privlages the oldest daughter, connoting the video is a representing of the everyday struggles she has to face. Aswell as the daughter the camera privlages the father. By doing this, it connotes to the viewers the strength and power he has over the memebers of his family. A lot of close up shots are used to inforce the emotion of the family. It allows an intimate relationship between viewer and video to be formed. A lot of different angles are used through out the video. When the father is being controlling or abusing his wife, there are alot of high angled shots are used to show that he has the most power in that situation. They usually show him towering over his wife or looking down at her. Making her feel belittled and irrelevant, which matches exactly what the video is planning to achieve. For all shots of the singer, close ups amd extreme close ups are used to show the intimacy and sadness she is feeling. It allows the audeicne to see the emotion in her eyes and the feelings her body language are connoting. All the shots connote the feelings and emotions within each scene. The editing has been cleverly put together, allowing this to happen. We see the father and mother together a lot throughout the music video, however the editing allows us to distinctly tell the difference between them being loving towards each other and the violent behaviour. Close up shots are used to show when the couple are being intimate, this shows the audience that there is still love involved between th both of them. The wife feels she cannot run away from him, she feels like she is still under his control and she has to obey by his rules. The close-up shots and the slow camera movement show the audience the delicacy of the situation.

Camera shots, angles and movement have a very strong connection with controlling how the audience feel abput the shot. They can make the audience side with a particuar character or have compleltely different opinions changing throughout the video, due to how they charcter is shown.

Editing:

The editing throughout this music video, has ben cleverly edited to compliment the audio, as well as the video. Both elements flow and run together seemlessly. Continuity editing is clearly present here. All camera rules (such as 180 degree rule) have all been followed. The editing i seemless from both narrative to performance. Both sets of video compliment eachother to look like one seemless piece of footage due to the editing.

The genre expectations have also evidently been kept in mind throughout the video whilst editing. This genre of dance music, is known for fast cuts and high key lighting. The cuts throughout the video match the audio. In faster tempos there are quicker cuts to match the genres expectations, where as when the audio tempo slows down, simultaneously so do the amount and speed of cuts. Editing can have a huge influence of a scene. When the father is seen abusing his wife, the cuts are usually fast and harsh. This connotes the punches and slaps he throws. It allows the audience to feel the harshness and rawness of the abuse. The audience can connect and see how quickly it can all happen. Simularily, when the daughter is crying and leaving home, the cuts are slower allowing the audience to experience how painful it is for her, knowing her father is ripping her family apart. The slow cuts, unconsciously make the audience feel the sadness dragging out. However both scenes can hold as much power as each other. The fast scenes can make the audience feel on edge and unable to control the situation and their feelings, where as slower scenes, pull more emotions out of the audience without them even knowing.

she is. The fact that every shot is in the same location, with the same lighting and costume, allows consistency and shows the reader that there is no escape from where she is, or how she is feeling.

The mise-en-scene for the rest of the narative are clevery set to look like an average middle-class family home. This allows many viewers to connect more and they can relate to the situation and become familiar with certain scenes. By shooting it in a family home, also shows that violent abuse does happen to people we know. By making it realatable lto the viewers allows the theme to become more realistic and forces the viewers to open their eyes to domestic violence. The clothing used, cleverly matches every scene. When lounging around at home - causual clothes are worn. Simple jumper and leggings. By placing the actors and actresses in familiar clothing allows the video to become more and more real for the viewers watching. However the clothing still remains appropriate throughout the entire video. When visiting the father in prision, all the inmates are shown in correct prision clthing and all guards in the approriate police uniform.   This allows no confusion between reality and fantasy.
